Every security vendor now claims an AI advantage, which makes it hard to tell where defensive tooling has genuinely closed the gap with offensive capability and where it is still behind. The honest picture is uneven: strong in some categories, meaningfully behind in others.
Where defense has kept pace
Anomaly detection across large volumes of authentication and network telemetry has improved substantially, and this is a place where defenders have a structural advantage: they see their own environment continuously, while an attacker sees it only in glimpses. AI-assisted correlation across that telemetry, catching the unusual login pattern or the odd data transfer, is one of the clearer wins for defensive AI.
Where defense is behind
Content generation is the clearest gap. An attacker generating a phishing variant or a malware sample only needs the output to work once against a specific target. A defensive tool trying to detect that output needs to generalize across an enormous and constantly shifting space of possible variants. That asymmetry favors offense structurally, not just because of current tooling maturity, and it is not going to fully close just because defensive models improve.
The false comfort of an AI vs AI arms race narrative
It is tempting to picture this as a symmetric race where better defensive AI eventually neutralizes better offensive AI. That framing understates how much of the actual advantage on both sides comes from data and deployment position, not model quality. A defender with poor visibility into their own environment does not get meaningfully safer by adding a better model on top of that poor visibility. The model is not the bottleneck in that case; the data feeding it is.
What this means practically
Invest in visibility and telemetry quality before investing in a more sophisticated defensive AI product layered on top of gaps. The most effective defensive AI is doing correlation and detection work on data you were already collecting well. No detection model, however capable, compensates for not seeing the activity in the first place.
